Dear Vestry and Christ Church Family:
The members of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Valdosta Branch, wish to thank you for the donation of $500 received from your vestry for our 15th annual Sister-to-Sister Summit that will be held on March 9, 2013, at Valdosta State University. This is a most generous gift, and the money will be well spent.
Based upon the attendance at last year’s Sister-to-Sister Summit, the AAUW expects to host about 100 girls ages 11 to 14 at the 2013 summit. We will reach out to several middle schools in Brooks and Lowndes counties and distribute invitations through several churches. Last year, the two prominent schools represented were Brooks County Middle Scool and Valdosta Middle School.
Empowerment, strengthening self-esteem and comaraderie, and encouraging girls to consider their potential to contribute to science, technology and math have been the themes of Summit workshops over the past few years. Highlights from last year’s Summit included a keynote address by Dr. Debra Tann (educator and political activist), talks on succeeding in a cyberworld, a planetarium show, two presentations on math and science (one serious, one humorous), and lunch in the Palms Dining Hall.
AAUW members are in the midst of planning the 2013 Sister-to-Sister program. Your contribution will help us pay for room rental, workshop supplies, the luncheon, and to cover other costs we may incur, such as transportation and printed materials. The Vestry and Christ Church Family will be designated as a sponsor on the T-shirts that we provide, free of charge, for all participants. Thank you for helping our organization to continue to impact the lives of young women from your community in this annual event.
