From the December 2012 Vineyard:

Many years ago Christ Church was fortunate to acquire the Sarah Oliver House, which currently houses our Rectory. The property surrounding the house was maintained during Mrs. Oliver’s lifetime as a beautiful camellia garden, which many of our past parishioners frequented. Hulyn Smith grafted many new camellias from the old growth. Though many years have passed and the garden has become overgrown, the camellias still survive. Recently, as a memorial to their dear friends Hulyn and Janet Smith, the Valdosta Camellia and Garden Club contributed money to revitalize the gardens. Funds provided are enough to provide the master plan, irrigation system, and initial cleanup of the site. In addition to the generous donation, they are also cultivating several of the thirty-six camellias developed by Hulyn that will be planted at Christ Church.

The selected design for the Camellia Garden benches.

Work has now progressed to a stage where we can think about acquiring benches to be placed along the pathways in the Garden. There are 9 bench locations in the Camellia Garden that is being revamped. The bench pictured here (actual color may be different) is the bench design selected for the Garden. This is a commercial bench that comes with a warranty and will last for a very long time with no maintenance. According to the manufacturer, it features “graceful gentle curves combined with strong, straight lines … a dramatic and elegant design. Highly durable steel slats make this bench an enduring favorite for all settings.”

Each bench is priced at $1750 which includes the bench; shipping, installation and a bronze plaque which purchaser will specify its content (see form, posted online here). In order to reserve a bench simply fill out the plaque form and give either to Kim Dudley (parish administrator) or Amy Creasy (bookkeeper) with a check for $1750 made out to Christ Church with a note in the memo section “Camellia Garden Bench.”
