Backpacks, Bears and Books

During a recent meeting of Civic Roundtable, whose members include representatives from non-profit groups in Valdosta and Lowndes County, Gail Finley of the Division of Family and Children Services (DFACS) told me that children who were moving from unsafe or abusive situations into foster homes often carried what little belongings they had in plastic trash bags. Perhaps, I thought, Christ Church might be willing to help with a special, new outreach ministry—collecting backpacks or small suitcases, along with teddy bears or stuffed toys and books to put in the backpacks as a comfort for these children.
When I presented this idea to the Vestry on August 12th, the members unanimously endorsed it to become one of Christ Church’s ministries in our community. If you would like to help, please consider donating new or gently-used children’s backpacks or suitcases, along with children’s books and teddy bears or other stuffed toys. These items can be left in the church office or brought to me, and I will take them to DFACS to be given to the children in need. If you prefer to make a monetary contribution, I will be happy to do the shopping for you! For further information, please contact me (firstname.lastname@example.org or 229-630-8644). Many thanks to the Vestry and to everyone who is willing to help!
