Vespers is one of the services of evening prayer. The Christ Church Vespers service is held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening in the choir seats behind the altar. The service is quiet and meditative, slowing down the hectic pace of the day and centering on God. Those who attend most often use the Compline service in the Book of Common Prayer, but they sometimes use alternative services like the New Zealand Prayer Book or another service specific to the liturgical season. Those who attend rotate as leaders and scripture readers, but there is no obligation to lead if you choose not to. The format includes an informal discussion of a brief Gospel reading. The service usually lasts about 20 minutes.
During the summer, Vespers was held in the Gabard Building when the church held a Sunday Evening Eucharist service in the church at 6:00 p.m. The Vespers service has now returned to the space and time it has used for many years. If you have ever wondered what it felt like to sit in the choir, this is your chance. Our church in the evening light has a special beauty whether in darkness during winter or amethyst light during spring, summer and fall. Often, those who attend go to supper together at a local restaurant after the service. Join us.
