Thank you Christ Church! This year’s Dominican Night Dinner and Auction was one of the best ever. Held on Thursday evening, April 16, 2015, at the Cotton Corner in downtown Valdosta and catered by Covington’s, the event sparkled with Carribean-colored tablecloths and flower arrangements as well as delicious food. The experience of sharing good food, enjoying the fellowship of church members and friends, and raising money for our mission outreach in a beautiful setting gladdened the heart and lifted the spirit. Our “Home Team” really is making a difference in the lives of the Dominican children. We raised $17,030 as of April 22 for scholarships in the school we helped build in El Pedregal, the Colegio Monte de la Transfiguración. This is the most money we have ever raised and includes the mailed-in contributions as well as event purchases and contributions on the evening of the event.
The combined live and silent auctions had 40 items donated by Christ Church members and friends of our church. Duke Guthrie auctioned 15 items with his trademark humor and great enthusiasm. Eighty-nine people attended the event, and many who could not attend sent scholarship checks. The auction committee consisting of Julia Ariail, Jeana Beeland, Pat Bezona, Nan Duckworth, Phyllis Holland, Fr. Dave Johnson, Becky Meadors, Marilyn Miller, Jeani Synyard, Tamara Thomas, and Helen Tucker worked for two months to prepare for the event. Sandy Sandbach made sure everyone had something to drink with their meal, and Dennis Marks worked with Marilyn Miller to make the checkout easy.
Fr. Dave Johnson and Steph Johnson spoke about their experiences in mission work, describing both the very humorous things that happen when you can’t speak the same language as your hosts as well as the life changing, spiritual blessings one receives when sharing the love of God with those who have less material goods than we have but sometimes more spiritual gifts.
This year’s mission “Go” team from Christ Church has 19 members. Six are from Christ Church: Julia and Julius Ariail, the Rev. Dave Johnson, Pepi Nelson, Bill Querin, and Paul Stevenson. Five are members of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Orlando, Florida: The Rev. Sonia Sullivan Clifton, Dan Cook, Andrew Nutting, Rylin Smith, and Debby Wunderly. Four are members of Holy Trinity, Statesboro: Fred Richter, Allison Carroll, Eben Nelson and Gavin Nelson. In addition, we also have Jim Drazdowski of Christ Church, Sidney, Nebraska; Grady Lacy of St. Clement’s in Canton, Georgia; Bert Power ofPassion City Church Buckhead in Atlanta; and Mary Stowe of the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, NC.
Thank you for your support of this mission. The Home Team goes to the Dominican Republic with the Go Team in spirit. What a magnificent spirit we all have for this work!
